Why low-voltage lighting transforms a hardscape after sunset — and how to plan for it during install.
Lighting is the cheapest way to double the value you get from a hardscape, because it makes the space usable for the other half of the day.
Low-voltage (12V) LED systems are the standard: safe to work around, easy to expand, and inexpensive to run. A transformer sized with 20% headroom lets you add fixtures later without re-pulling wire.
For walkways, alternate path lights rather than lining them up like a runway, and keep spacing at 8 to 10 feet so pools of light overlap softly. Hardscape lights tucked under a seat wall cap or step nose give the same safety benefit with no visible fixture.
Warm color temperature — 2700K to 3000K — flatters travertine, clay pavers and stone. Cooler light makes a warm hardscape look gray and clinical.
The important part: sleeve the conduit under the pavers during install. Retrofitting lighting after the hardscape is finished always costs more.
