Clearance first: keep at least 10 feet between the fire feature and any structure, fence, or overhanging branches, and never place a fire pit under a screened lanai unless it's a vented gas unit rated for it.
Seating flow matters more than size. Allow roughly 30 inches between the pit edge and the front of your seating, and leave a walking lane behind chairs so guests aren't squeezing past the fire.
